INTRODUCTION

Hi, I'm Starbuck. A few days ago, I was talking to a friend of mine
and we got onto the subject of The Curse of Monkey Island. Naturally I
had completed the game, and it's predecessors, but I felt an urge to do
it again. The Monkey Island series housed three excellent games, and the
first is where I am going to start my FAQ career. Questions, comments
(especially comments) go to the above address.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE
========================================================================

Whenever you reach a new area, I will give a bit of description on that
area. Then there will be numbered points on exactly what to do.
Something like this (anything to be done that is fun, or funny, is
marked with a *):

A LITTLE BACKGROUND INFO AND BASIC PLOT
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once upon and island named Melee, a swashbuckling pirate known as
LeChuck, the most fearsome of all, fell in love with the Governor of the
island, Elaine Marley, daughter of one of the four pirates to discover
Big Whoop, a treasure in every pirates dreams. She rejected LeChuck, and
told him to drop dead (which he promptly did). Now he wanders the
scorching seas of hell as an undead warrior, and vows to return and
marry Elaine, whether she likes it or not.

WHO IS GUYBRUSH THREEPWOOD?
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guybrush Threepwood is a wannabe pirate, and, in the beginning, of
little threat to LeChuck. He's wet behind the ears, inexperienced and
clumsy. But he is determined, and he can hold his breath for ten minutes
(sort of a running joke =). He comes to Melee to become a pirate, and
must pass the three trials (Sword Mastery, Thievery and... er...
Treasure Huntery) in order to do so. But once he learns of Elaine they
develop a 'friendship' and he will do all he can to protect her.

PART 1 - The Three Trials
========================================================================

Welcome to Melee, an island of pirates. Have a chat to the lookout if
you want, then head down past the cliff and to the docks.

000. Walk until you reach the Scumm Bar
001. Open the door of the Scumm Bar
002. Walk to the curtain
***. Talk to the dog
003. Talk to the Important looking pirates
004. Learn of the three trials
005. Open door on the right
006. Walk to curtain
007. Wait until the chef leaves
008. Walk in though the door
009. Pick up hunk of meat on table
010. Pick up pot under table
011. Walk out to the right
012. Step on the plank in the bottom right
013. Do it again
014. And again, the bird will fly up
015. Quickly pick up the fish
016. Leave the Scumm Bar

017. Leave this place the same way you came in

018. Go to the red/pink dot called Clearing
019. Walk into the tent
020. Keep talking
021. When given the option, say that you will shoot yourself from the
cannon
022. When asked for a helmet, show the pot that you picked up
023. Receive 478 Pieces of Eight!
024. Leave the tent and the circus
025. Go back to the town with the Scumm Bar in it
026. Walk past the Scumm Bar and into the streets
027. Purchase a 'map' from the sneaky looking guy (this is useful)
028. Talk to the men of low moral fibre
029. When talking about the minutes, say you'll take some if they give
you two pieces of eight
***. Keep touching the rat
030. Walk into the fortune tellers shop on the right
031. Pick up the chicken (not the dead ones)
032. Talk to the fortune teller (recommended) then leave
033. Go through the archway
034. Go into the first door you see
035. Pick up the sword at the back
036. Buy it
037. Pick up the shovel up the stairs
038. Buy it
039. Go to the alley to learn about Fester Shinetop
040. Go into the prison
041. Keep talking to the guy until he mentions halitosis
042. Go back to the shop and talk to the shop keeper to get breath
mints
043. Ask to be taken to the Sword Master
044. The shopkeeper will leave; follow him
045. Follow him into the forest
046. Keep taking the twists and turns until you come to the Sword
Master
047. This location is now on your map, so leave
048. Go to the house on the very right of the map
049. Knock on the door and keep saying you have what it takes
050. Get 'trained'
051. Learn about 'You fight like a dairy farmer'
052. OK, now what you have to do is wander around the island getting
into sword fights. When you get into one, use insults that you do not
know the answer to, and hopefully, the other guy will and you can learn
the full insult. Hopefully he will say a new insult, which you then can
repeat the cycle on. See the bottom for the list of all insults
053. When you think you have learned enough (there are 15) go to the
Sword Master
054. Here you really do have to use your own wit. The insults are
different, but all the responses are the same
055. You will receive a T-Shirt proving you beat her
056. Go back to the map screen
057. Go back into the forest
058. Now, go back to the fork
059. Look at your map/dance lessons. If the map says back, go to the
entrance in the back. If it says left, go left and so on.
060. Pick up a yellow flower on the way
061. You'll come to an X.
062. Dig
063. You'll soon receive a T-Shirt
064. Leave the fork
065. Go to the village again
066. Go through it all the way until you reach the Governors Mansion
067. Use the yellow petal with the hunk of meat
068. Use the meat with condiment with the dogs
069. Go inside
070. Enter the door and watch the sequence. Funny!
071. Leave and go back to the prison
072. Give the breath mints to Otis
073. Give the gopher repellant to Otis
074. 'Open' the carrot cake he gives you to find a file
075. Go back into the mansion
076. Enter the hole in the wall and watch the next sequence
077. When confronted, say anything, it doesn't matter
078. You'll end up underwater
079. Pick up the idol
080. The governor has been kidnapped!
081. Talk to the lookout for a bit
082. Go into the Scumm Bar
083. Pick up all the mugs you can find
084. Fill up one mug with grog from the back room
085. Now quickly go to the prison, pouring the grog from one mug into
another mug when the mug looks dirty
086. Use the mug full of grog on the lock
087. Get gipped by Otis
088. Go back to the Sword Masters house
089. She'll join you
090. Go to the island in the upper right of the map
091. Use the chicken on the cable
092. Talk to MeatHook
***. Insult him
093. Mention the governor and prove yourself
094. Go to the map (use the chicken again)
095. Go to the Lights (Stans)
096. Talk to him about the cheapest ship
097. When he mentions credit from the storekeeper, go to the store
098. Ask about a note and remember the safe code
099. Say some job you don't really have; he will put the note back
100. Memorise the sequence
101. Ask about the Sword Master; he will go away
102. Go get the note from the safe using Push and Pull
103. Go back to stans
104. See the cheap boat again
105. Keep saying 5000 pieces of eight and his price will go to 7500
106. Try to leave. Stan will tell you to come back (do so)
107. Keep saying 5000... eventually you'll be able to buy it
108. Go to the docks

003. Go back down and into the hatch
004. Go into the doorway
005. Open the cupboard
006. Pick up the cereal
007. Pick up the pot under the table

009. Look at the prize; its really a small key
010. Go out the door and down the other hatch
011. Open the kegs on the left to get gunpowder
012. Pick up the rope
013. Open the chest in the bottom right
014. Get the fine wine
015. Go up the ladder
016. Go up the next ladder
017. Go in the door
018. Use the small key in the closet
019. Pick up the chest and open it
020. Get the cinnamon and the paper
021. Open the drawer and get the book
022. Read it
023. Pick up the ink
024. Pick up the feather
025. Go outside, down the hatch and through the door
026. Look at the piece of paper and put in all the ingredients... or
just chuck everything in that you can find
027. You'll become unconcious; setting you off to monkey island!
***. Look at the cauldron
028. Use your business card with the fire
029. Go back to the cannon
030. Use the gunpowder with the cannon nozzle
031. Use the rope with the cannon
032. Use the flaming mass with the rope
033. Quickly use the pot
034. KABOOM!

PART 3 - Under monkey island

000. Put yourself out
001. Read the notice on the tree
002. Pick up the banana
003. Go to the map screen

004. Go up and left and go to the beach
005. Pick up the memo and talk to Herman
006. Go back out to the map
007. Go to the river fork
008. Pick up the memo and the 'rock' (its actually a flint)
009. Go up the ladder
010. Pick up the note
011. Go up the next ladder
***. Go to the very right (funny funny funny!)
012. Push the rock (heh heh heh)
013. Keep moving the seesaw and pushing rocks until you have killed
your ship and hit the banana tree
014. Leave this area and go to the beach on the right
015. Get the memo out of the bottle
016. Leave and go to the beach with the banana tree
017. Pick up the bananas
018. Go to the left hand screen and go to the fort
019. Pick up the spyglass
020. Push the cannon
021. Get rid of Herman
022. Pick up the gunpowder and the cannonball
023. Pick up the rope
024. Leave and go to the dam
025. Put the gunpowder in the dam
026. Use the flint withthe cannonball or the staple remover
027. Go to the pond
028. Pick up the rope
029. Leave and go to the crack
030. Use both ropes on the strong branch and sturdy stump
031. Pick up the oars
032. Go to the boat
033. Go up and right to the next screen
034. Land at the beach and pick up the note
035. Exit the beach and go to the huts
036. Take the bananas
037. Get captured
***. Say 'look behind you a three headed monkey' twice
038. You can't give them anything right now, so just accept your fate
039. You're in the 'prison'
040. Pick up the skull
041. Pick up the loose board under it
042. Exit
***. Keep getting caught and look at the door
043. Go to the rowboat and down one screen, then down another
044. Go to the beach here
045. You should have five bananas. Give them all to the monkey
046. He should 'look happy'. Then leave
047. The monkey will follow you. Go to the giant monkey head
048. Pull the totem nose
049. Try to enter the monkey head. The monkey will lend a hand
050. Enter the monkey grounds
051. Pick up the wimpiest looking idol
***. Heheh, I only noticed it this time around, but check out the idol
at the bottom of the screen (Sam and Max)
052. Leave and get caught by cannibals
053. Give them the idol
054. Go into the prison and pick up the banana picker
055. You'll see Herman on the way out; trade your picker for his 'key'
056. Go to the cannibal village again
057. Talk to the cannibals
058. When they tell you about their navigator head, question them
059. Give them the 'How to get ahead in navigating' leaflet
060. Get the grotty head
061. Leave and go to the big monkey head
062. Use the 'key' in its ear
063. Enter the catacombs
064. Pull out the head. Follow wherever it looks
065. Soon you'll get to LeChucks ghostly ship!
066. Talk to the navigator head
067. Keep begging to have the necklace
068. When you get it, use it
069. Walk onto the ship
070. Go down the hatch
071. Go through the passageway
072. Pick up a chicken, you'll get a feather
073. Go use the feather to tickle the ghost in the next room, you MUST
put the pointer over his feet. Do it twice
074. Go out and to the door on the other side
075. Use Stans magnetic compass on the key
076. Walk out
077. Go to the hatch and open the hatch inside with the key
078. Put the jug o' grog into the rat dish
079. Grab some grease
080. Go back to the squeaky door and use the grease on it
081. Go in and get the ghost tools
082. Go down the hatch and into the next room and use the tools on the
crate
083. Grab the voodoo root!
084. Go out and away
085. This whole part is just fun to play. Enjoy! You've (almost) done
it!

PART 4 - Guybrush kicks butt
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, thats it. There is nothing more except watching the ending
(practically) so I'll let you do it, it's quite fun. Just make sure that
when LeChuck is beating you up to use the vending machine and get the
root beer to spray him. You've finished Monkey Island!

INSULTS AND SWORDPLAY
------------------------------------------------------------------------

To master the sword you must master your wit. Here are the correct
phrases and answers, marked I for insult and A for answer. In no
particular order.

I: You fight like a dairy farmer
A: How appropriate, you fight like a cow

I: This is the END for you, you gutter crawling cur!
A: And I've got a little TIP for you. Get the POINT?

I: Soon you'll be wearing my sword like a shish kabob!
A: First you better stop waving it like a feather duster

I: You make me want to puke
A: You make me think someone already did

I: There are no words for how disgusting you are
A: Yes there are, you just haven't learned them

I: I once owned a dog that was smarter than you
A: He must have taught you everything you know

I: Have you stopped wearing diapers yet?
A: Why, did you want to borrow one?

I: My handkerchief will wipe up your blood
A: I'm glad to hear you got that job as janitor after all

I: No one has ever drawn blood from me and no one ever will
A: You run THAT fast

I: I've heard you are a contemptible sneak
A: To bad no ones ever heard of YOU at all

I: I've spoken with apes more polite than you
A: I'm glad to hear you attended your family reunion

I: People fall at their feet when they see me coming
A: Even BEFORE they smell your breath?

I: You have the manners of a beggar
A: I wanted to make sure you'd feel comfortable with me

I: I got this scar on my face during a mighty struggle
A: I hope now you've learned to stop picking your nose
