Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Def Com Military Academy. you are
about to operate the most advanced battle simulator ever created.
the terminal in front of you controls the geo-stationary spy satellite
above the virtual landmass that comprises the THEATRE of DEATH.
The campaign commences in the grassland area. progresses to the desert and
onto the Artic wastes. upon completing the correct quota of missions you
will be transported to the moon base ALPHA for the ultimat series of
challenges the academys mainframe has to offer.
So if you are sitting comfortably and your reactions and strategic
intelligence is at its sharpest, we will bring the house lights down and
immerse you in the total experience that is the 'THEATRE of DEATH'.

Starting a MISSION
------------------
Once you have satisfied the DEF COM entry security systems. you are
presented with the MISSION select menu. choose from one of the options.
1) NEW GAME
2) PASSWORDS

whenever a mission is completed. the password to access the next mission
selection is displayed. choose this option and enter the desired password
to show the avaiolable mission selections at a later date. (if shell shock
is not a problem)

NEW GAME
--------
Selecting the new game woill transfer you into theatre of death proper. as
you progress through the missions, they will increase indifficulty with
each new mission chosen. and allow you to experience combat in a number of
highly dangerous and demanding scenarios from all regions of the world. and
make no mistake cadet,if you make it through to the end,we'll have made a
goddam GENERAL outta you!

TERRAIN TYPES/MAP SCREEN
------------------------
The DEF COM battle sim is programmed to offer the 4 main global terrain
types found on earth for battle simulation these are.
GRASSLAND / DESERT / SNOW / LUNAR

when you enter the theatre of death your operations will commence in the
grasslands. you will notice a number of flags on the terrain, each flag
represents an individual mission but is coloured coded to make your
progress across the terrain more straegically based and therefore more
ordered (in accordance with maxim 472 pp569 para A C4 which states watch
your back or the enemy will attack)

WHITE FLAG.....the mission is currently available
RED FLAG.......mission is not yet available-will become available in future
BLUE FLAG......mission has been completed

each terrain comprises of 15 individual missions,however at any one
time,only 3 will be available(3 white flags displayed) click on a flag to
select that mission and to enter the mission briefin,when a mission has
been completed,one red flag will become white and the previous mission flag
will become BLUE,after completing 10 missions on a single terrain area,you
will then be allowed to enter the RESTRICTED zone of the def Com Sim - THE
LUNAR LEVELS! -
once a mission has been briefed,it may be selected by clicking the left
mouse button at the bottom left hand side of the screen,the mission may be
aborted prior to its commencement and a new mission chosen by clicking the
left mouse button at the bottom right hand side of the screen.

CONTROL SYSTEM
--------------
In accordance with the sim control device GL1000(K1) the human/simulator
interface has been developed to offer the optimum level of control over the
battle. it is suggested that you actively interface with your Def Com
TERMINAL whilst using these instructions.

LIVE ACTION SCREEN
------------------
this is where the theatre of death happens,through this screen you will see
the enemy crushed and the life and death struggle on any particular active
theatre.it will also allow you to
annihilate,maim,slaughter,destroy,incinerate,crsuh,strafe and dismember in
the most enjoyable and effortless manner.

1. Ammo Indicator
-----------------
the ammo indicator displays the amount of ammo available for the particular
weapon in use to the soldier currently under control.

2. Health indicator
-------------------
Displays the current health of the soldier currently under control

3. Map
------
This icon calls up the Map screen (see following section)

4. Land
-------
The land icon is only available to the vehicles under direct control,as
follows.

HELICOPTER...The helicopter will land and the pilot climb out
TANK.........The driver disembark
APC..........Cannot land
ALC..........Cannot land

Note. if a vehicle attempts to land to close to a scenery object.it will
crash and explode,plus. if a helicopter attempts to land over a scenery
object,it will be refused permission. it is therefore wise to land in a
clearing.away from enemy and scenery.

5. Halt
-------
selecting halt pauses the game and displays the current state of play -
chinooks remaining.choppers in H pad,your current score,select HALT by
double clicking on the icon with the LHMB

6. Satellite Tracking Systems [STS]
-----------------------------------
The Defcom satellite possesses four individually-tracking imaging systems
which can be programmed to track any individual friendly units
simultaneosly in addition to your independant satellite view.once a
particular unit has been selected for tracking,the cadet may be returned to
that unit.immediately and at any time by selecting the appropriate
satellite tracking system.to programme an STS to track a unit,follow the
instructions below.

1. select an individual within a unit for tracking.
2. press the RHMB (right hand mousee button) on an STS icon to start the
tracking of the unit currently under control.
3. whenever the the LHMB is pressed on the same STS icon,the live action
screen will centre on to this unit.

7. Air strike
-------------
Air strikes are available only on selected friendly missions where enemy
activity is assessed as too high for the friendly units available.if
however you personelly deem enemy activity too high on a screen where air
strikes are not available,then that is to tough. this is a man's army and
there's no room for YELLOW bellies!
Once you signal an airstrike by double clicking your LHMB on the ICON,you
will be asked to put in the exact coordinates where ypou want the aircraft
to drop their payload. to find the coordinates simply move to the MAP
screen and cross reference the map by identifying the point you wish to
bomb and read the coordinates of the top and side of the map.
Input the EAST/WEST cordinates before the NORTH/SOUTH side and seperate
both with a hyphen.
Once the cordinates are selected an airstrike will be launched at the
location - all buildings and troops present will be targeted,WITHOUT
DISCRIMINATION.

8. Troop assist
---------------
Reinforcements will fly to the specified area by chinook and rappel to the
ground.as with airstrikes,this facility is only available on certain missions.
use the same method for coordiantes as you did on selecting an airstrike.

9. Weapon select
----------------
A soldier can carry 2 weapons at any given time,select the appropriate
weapon with LHMB.weapons may be changed or re-loaded at AMMO dumps.

10. Info Box
------------
Displays information on the current state of play

11. Music On/Off

If you like your killing quest quiet,click on this icon to turn music off

1. Exit
-------
returns Play to the main screen.
if the LHMB is clicked anywhere on the map prior to selecting this option
you are returned to the main screen at this location.

2. Show leaders
---------------
This toggles on/off the platoon number/sysmbol shown above the platoon
leader on the map.

3. Platoon symbols
------------------
In the theatre of death all men are part of a platoon,the whole platoon
works and moves as a single unit and is controlled on the map screen as
such,rather than individuals within a platoon, to move a unit,follow this
procedure.

1. choose the platoon you wish to command by clicking the LHMB on its
platoon sysmbol(the entire platoon will be highlighted).
NOTE. do not click on the platoon symbol on the MAP screen.

2. Next select the movement mode desired (see below)

3. then select the position you wish the platoon to move towards by
pressing the LHMB on the position on the map. the whole platoon will now
advance towards this location, unless otherwise instructed (or obstructed)
the platoon will advance to the designated position where they will carry
out the orders given in the command select panel.

4. Skull
--------
surrender mission, suurender your self respect,yellow belly!!

5. morale indicators
--------------------
these display the current state of morale of both friendly and enemy
forces.

6. Command select panel
-----------------------
there are 4 commands which can be issued to individual platoons, these commands
allow you as commander to issue commands to units that are not under direct
control (ie on the live action screen) so your forces can be deployed with
optimum effectiveness. to issue a command to a platoon,it must be
highlighted on the map screen.

Attack.....once the platoon has reached its destination,each member of the
unit will hunt down and engage the nearest enenmy.

Defend.....once the location is reached the platoon will remain stationary
and only fire upon enemies that come within firing range.

retreat....when the unit sights an enemy platoon,it will retreat from them
rather than engaging in combat. this option is not...I repeat NOT an option
our cadets are expected to use regularly.

Patrol.....A mix between attack and defend.once the platoon has reached its
destination,it will move about the area and engage any enemies that come
within firing range.

7. Toggle switches
------------------
these control what is displayed on the map,as follows.
Men.....all men (friend or foe) on/off
Air.....air units on/off
Ground..ground vehicles on/off
You.....frieendly units on/off
enemy...enemy forces on/off

8.Info Box
----------
displays current info on the state of play

Platoon control section
-----------------------
Mouse and Keyboard...all interactions are carried out using the mouse and
keyboard.

KEYBOARD CONTROLS
-----------------
Cursosr Keys...scroll the screen in the appropriate direction (you know..UP
goes up ect..)the screen will follow a selected individual
around.However,it is often necessary to move the screen
independently,offering a larger scope of view,using the cursor keys.

Numbers...Used to enter the co-ordinates for reinforcement and airstrikes.

MOUSE CONTROLS

Theatre of Death's primary control interface is via the mouse.

Left Mouse Button (described in here as L.H.M.B)

the LHMB as the following functions. 1. Icon Selection
2. Troop Selection
3. Troop Movement
4. Platoon leader

1. Icon Selection
-----------------
Icon selection is simply achieved by moving the cursor to the desired icon
and clicking the LHMB (unless otherwise specified in the relevant section)

2. Troop Selection
------------------
Click the LHMB on any friendly soldier or occupied vehicle and he will be
selected for control, he is now under direct control.

3. Troop Movement
-----------------
Once a unit is selected,position the cursor anywhere on the live action
screen,click the LHMB and the unit currently under control will proceed to
this location. NOTE - even where a controlled soldier is off
screen,clicking on the live action screen will command him to move to that
point.

4. Platoon leader
-----------------
An important note is that if the platoon leader (the green man) is selected
then the whole troop will follow his lead.

Right hand Mouse Button (referred to as RHMB)
--------------------------------------------
When a man or vehicle is under your direct control,pressing the RHMB will
cause him to fire the weapon he is carrying.[see weapon select panel to
view current weapon].most weapons will fire in a direct line towards the
cursor.
The RHMB is also used to start recording the position of friendly units
with satellite trackers [see section on STS]

BOTH MOUSE BUTTONS
------------------
when a unit in direct control is on screen and possesses a jet-pack. press
BOTH mouse buttons will use the jet pack's booster rockets, Your'e airborne
soldier!
                               
Weapon Types
------------
There are 6 weapon types available throughout the game,the following
descriptions are only applicable when you have a direct control of a man or
vehicle employing that particular weapon [see weapon selection].

Note. press the RHMB to fire a weapon.

Machine Gun
-----------
Hold down the RHMB and strafe by moving the mouse cursor

Dynamite
--------
Press the RHMB once and a box of dynamite is dropped. a short time delay is
given to allow the area to be cleared before detonation.

Land Mines
----------
Press RHMB once and a land mine is dropped. these are invisible to men who
are not under your direct control(including enemy umnits]and are lethal on
contact.

Rocket launcher
---------------
Move the cursor to the desired location on the screen,click the RHMB once
and a rocket will be fired on a line between your man and the cursor. it
will detonate when it hits an object or reaches the cursor position.

Grenades
--------
Move the cursor to the target,press the RHMB once and a grenade will be
thrown to this position and explode.

Flame Thrower
-------------
The flame thrower fires in 8 directions around the user, position the
cursor and press the RHMB to employ. inflammable objects will burn.

USE OF WEAPONS
--------------
Men..........May use all weapons
Helicopters..may use machine guns and rockets
Tanks........may use machine guns and rockets
APC..........No weapons available for use
ALC..........No weapons available for use

VEHICLES
--------
Helicopter.
-----------
helicopters can be flown by walking onto an H pad or into a vacanyt
helicopter where it will take off automatically. press the LAND icon and
the helicopter will land and the pilot will leave the vehicle.
helicopters can fly over ground obstructions, they fire machine guns and
rockets.

Tanks
-----
these may be driven by a man walking into any unoccupied tank, tanks are
extremely effective against infantry, firing machine guns and rockets,as
well as being able to physically crush the enemy (or your forces).

APC
---
An APC 9armoured personnel carrier) used to carry up to 5 men through
danger areas,move men into the APC to load them aboard,unload them by
pressing the RHMB,APC have no weaponary whatso-ever.

ALC
---
These are identical to APC's but travel only on water,and land on a jetty.



Scenery
-------
AMMO DUMPS
----------
when out of ammunition,a soldier (not a vehicle) can enter an ammo dump to
re-load or change weaons,once the ammo dump is entered a requester will
appear to show which weapons and ammo are avilable.

use the RHMB to re-arm the chosen weapon
use the LHMB to change weapon
EXIT returns you to the main menu

PRISONS
-------
these can contain men,if a prison is destroyed it will release any men
within it,any freed men will have NO ammo.

BONUS CRATES
------------
Special Bonus crates can be collected across all terrains.these contain
bonuses such as health,ammo or points.

Features / Hints / Tips
-----------------------
. You cannot shoot anybody behind a hill or in a trench
. people can be grenaded in a trench
. Movement is slower when on a slope
. rockets will impact on the sides of hills before reaching their targets
. you cannot shoot a man behind an object (house/tree ect)
. if a man collides with an object while moving to a destination he'll go
around it.
. play continues whilst the map is on
. make use of the cameras. you can keep track of up to 4 groups with this.
practise their use in the training sessions as profeciency in their use
saves a lot of screen scrolling,switching and lives!
. make good use of the platoon commands.it is often not a good idea to
command a direct assault.troops will be lost your troops
. make good use of on screen objects. hide behinf the buildings and trees
to surprise the enemy
. traitors will not gun down the enemy if they are currently selected
. land mines are very useful if an enemy is on attack mode(most of the
time) they will head for the nearest squad of men.mine the area and
theyv'e had it.
